One of the competencies that need to be mastered is the pedagogical competency. This is about one's ability to manage the student in the learning process. Below are some pedagogical competencies that a lecturer must have1.
The initial step to play the role as a lecturer is to know the students' characteristics. The initial step in this process is conducting an activity in introducing among the students and how they interact between themselves in the classroom. Through this process the lecturer can be familiar with each student's character. Therefore, the teaching materials can be delivered effectively and the students can understand it as well. Knowing students' characteristics enables a lecturer to manage the classroom well.
The next step after a lecturer knows the students' characteristics well is to master the theories and principles on teaching and learning. Not only mastering the subject, but a lecturer also has to be able to deliver and teach the subject to the students in a correct approach. By mastering the learning theories and principles, a lecturer can format the best strategy in teaching: from the methodology, the supporting tools needed, up to the evaluation of the students.
One of the obligations that a lecturer must have is designing the syllabus and the lesson plan based on the curriculum. In designing them, a lecturer must be able to adjust based on the students' needs.
After a lecturer is able to manage the class well, a lecturer needs to create an effective and educating learning atmosphere. For example, a lecturer may use a media such as an appropriate game to deliver the teaching materials. This will create a fun atmosphere. Therefore, the learning process will run smoother and be more effective. At the same time, it will develop the creativity of the lecturer.
Basically, each student has their own capacity. A lecturer plays an important role in guiding and directing students' capacity to be benefiting their future. An example is by creating a competition among the students related to science and technology, or art and culture.
A communication skill is a basic supporting competence that a lecture must have. The learning process will run effectively as long as there is an interactive communication between the lecturer and the students. A lecturer needs to develop a two-way communication with their students, where the lecturer has to be able to encourage their students to respond to what has been delivered.
Scoring and evaluating is the last part of a learning process. A lecturer must be able to score based on what the students achieved. The lecturer, then, must evaluate whether or not the class has run accordingly to the syllabus and lesson plan. The lecturer also needs to evaluate if the students meets the target or not.
By mastering those seven pedagogical competencies, a lecturer is expected to be able to deliver students who can help develop their country.
