Nurturing the Spirit of Entrepreneurship through Campus Curriculum

In 2015 one of the job search site showed that there was a big gap ratio between the numbers of job seekers and the job opportunities data amounted to 50:11. As the best innovative way, entrepreneurial will be needed to cover all aspects in creating jobs by developing ideas, and gathering resources to develop opportunities.

The business competition is getting tougher and superior skills will then be needed to survive in the current situation in relation to the unemployment roam. Therefore, to avoid the number of unemployment risks the entrepreneurial spirit needs to be seriously prepared from an early age.

Entrepreneurship now becomes the subject that can be taught in an education institution to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit. Instead of becoming public or private employees, knowledge of entrepreneurship education should become the awareness for all components in the education sectors. Basically, in the teaching learning process entrepreneurship education could be integrated in the curriculum at the higher education level to carry out activities related to the value of enterprise learning implementation of theory to practice.

The entrepreneurship curriculum will enrich the higher education system in Indonesia. This will bring positive impacts, namely the growth of entrepreneurial spirit among the next generation of our nation. It is similar to what the Director of the University of Ciputra’s Entrepreneurship Center, Ir. Antonius Tanan, M.B.A., M.Sc., said that entrepreneurship must be implemented in the education curriculum to be the solution for Indonesian nation in order to develop further, especially in the field of economic2.

The Head of BSI Career Center, Heri Kuswara, M.Kom mentioned that, there were at least seven steps for entrepreneurial curriculum to be applied in higher education with maximum results. They are; to improve the quality and capability of lecturers, to establish entrepreneurship centers, to establish partnerships with businesses, to build business units, to cooperate with financial institutions - both banking and non-banking institutions, and to conduct the entrepreneurship competitions periodically to increase the entrepreneurial spirit among the students3. If they are implemented seriously and earnestly, the entrepreneurship curriculum will help grow and strengthen the students’ entrepreneurial spirit. In addition, in the future excellent entrepreneurs will be born, and bring the nation to face a much better future.
